Milton Steinberg, z”l, was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who exhibited warmth, deep humility, a sharp intellect, a sense of humor and a shaliach tzibur’s voice. Born in Hungary, he was a survivor of Hungarian slave labor and the Mauthausen and Gunskirchen concentration camps. After the war he came to NYC where he reunited with his father and met his future wife, Lillie, in English language night school. Milton and Lillie were married for 69 years. Founders of the Riverdale Jewish
community, Riverdale Jewish Center and SAR Academy, they worked together to create
successful business ventures, first in apparel and then in real estate.
Lillie Steinberg, z”l, was a cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who exhibited exceptional courage and was widely respected for her kindness, compassion and noble deeds. Born in Slovakia in 1942 she was on the second transport to
Auschwitz, a horror she miraculously endured for 37 months. After losing her entire family, she went to Prague to work for Vaad Hatzalah to get survivors out of Europe. Eventually, Lillie came to the US on a teacher’s visa.
For more than 25 years, the Steinbergs exhibited exemplary concern for the health and well-being of the people of Israel and Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. Their generous support and tireless efforts helped Shaare Zedek build many world-class centers of excellence. The Steinbergs were so proud of their children Dr. Lu Steinberg and her husband Dr. Michael Schulder; Dr. Susan Steinberg and her husband Dr. Elliot Riegelhaupt; their grandchildren, Ilana, Talia, Paul, Josh, Mike and Rachel; and came to know some of their great-grandchildren, Layla, Cecelia, Laszlo, Miles, Sam, Calvin and Livia (named after her great-grandmother Lillie.)
